Theatre Conservatory Overview

The vision of the K.B. Polk Theatre Conservatory is to prepare students for acceptance at premier area performing arts high schools through a broad, skills-based approach to theatre arts. Students will be introduced to the basic concepts of theatre arts which are designed to accommodate both students who may have previously been involved in theatre and those with no experience. Students will use various creative drama techniques to build confidence and trust, inspire imagination, movement, and role-play. Through theatre games and activities, students will learn to lose inhibitions and will gain trust in themselves as well as others in their groups. Students will learn and use drama and theatre vocabulary in class discussions; the activities will specifically address the promotion and reinforcement of students' literacy skills, including reading, writing, listening and speaking. Students will exhibit and reinforce their skills through individual and group presentations, performances, movement and voice, character building, as well as script and journal writing.

More About Ms. Jazmine Jones

Ms. Jones is a Dallas native. She attended DeSoto High School, where she was a part of the Theatre Conservatory. She also served as the president of the International Thespian Society troupe. While there, she performed in plays such as Dearly Departed and Never Trust a City Slicker. Later, Ms. Jones went on to attend Prairie View A&M University. She graduated with a degree in Interdisciplinary Studies and a concentration in early childhood through the 6th grade. Upon graduation, she first landed a job in Houston ISD as a 2nd grade teacher. She later moved back home to Dallas and started working at K. B. Polk Center for Academically Talented and Gifted, as a 3rd grade Reading Language Arts teacher. Currently, she serves as the Theatre Director at Polk. Polk has been her home for 10 years. She has enjoyed seeing Polk evolve into what it is today.

Ms. Jones is also a mother of 2 young boys Jayden and Jordan. Ms. Jones is currently furthering her education by working on her school counselor's degree at Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas. She plans to one day become a school counselor and obtain her LPC License. One quote that she lives by is, “One child, one teacher, one book, and one pen can change the world” -Malala Yousafzai
